Florida Auctioneers Association Past President Myers Jackson writes:
The year of the Auctioneer 2028
Hold on, you say. That’s 10 years from now. Correct. However, it will be very soon that we enter into 2018. You may ask yourself, “Must I wait 10 years to be involved in the year of the auctioneer?” The answer is an emphatic no! In fact, this next year could be your best year ever.
The problem is that many will not start doing what it takes to excel. Many will dream of what is to come while others will make resolutions and set goals. The sad fact, though, is that not many will follow through. The good news is that we have time to change our actions. This will start with a simple self-assessment: Who am I? What do I want to achieve? How can I excel? What is my first step?
The following self-assessment may create awareness within your own realm of reality.
First: What is my first step?
“Do something, even if it’s wrong,” said Duke Peppers, my first boss ever. After simply asking what should I be doing my first day on the job, his reply set my mind in motion. So, 32 years of things done wrong have been allowing me to learn valuable lessons creating vivid realities, instilling within me a drive to excel. Adversity has been calculated in every step; no, not by me, none of us wants to create our own complications. Consequently, the forces of nature will fill a path with many instances in which we have to solve problems or overcome that inevitable obstacle. Today you can sit in front of your TV or surf the web watching others perform and conquer. Or you can get up out of your chair, walk outside, take a breath of fresh air and do something great. Yes, even if some things go wrong.
Second: What do you want to achieve?
As I write this I am on a plane to San Diego. I am going to a ceremony which will honor the last living survivor of The Battle of Iwo Jima. He is a 94-year-old Marine Corps Veteran and recipient of the Medal of Honor. The United States is naming a ship the USNS Hershel Woody Williams for his heroic actions which were helpful in turning the tides during WWII. My heart beats proudly as I am overcome with exuberance thinking about it. You may ask what does this have to do with anything.
Let me ask you, what do you want to do? Are you going to measure your achievements? At the time of my starting in the Auction business I did not have a clue who I was as an Auctioneer. But, let me tell you, I began trying things; listening; learning. I then knew I had the potential to be more than who I was. Here I am now, about to be part of the Christening Ceremony of a United States Naval Vessel – this will be a history making event.
Living with achievements is a great thing. Having the motivation to create your own destiny is not tough. It is in you somewhere. As you are reading this, your thoughts abound in many of your accomplishments. If you have yet to start an achievement wall, or if you find yourself saying, “I just don’t know where to start”, get busy and start today. Think about how sweet you want your achievement to be, then make your plan. What will your next course of action be?
Third? Oh, yes, that’s right…who are you?
Anyone you want to be. However, you must be willing to do something; yes, even if it is wrong. Learn from your mistakes and overcome the adversities cast in your way. Ask for help; attend gatherings with like-minded people who also want to excel; share your joys; cry if necessary; support others; make friends that will stand by you no matter what.
Furthermore, overcome unpredictable circumstances with unexpected solutions. A positive needs a negative-just ask any battery. Do not quit! Most of all, Believe in yourself when nobody else does! Trust me, you will find out who you are.
