Though records are vague, it appears that the first settlers arrived in the area in 1846. An early settler was Dr. J.G. Reynolds. At that time the area was known as Elizabeth Town, later Mooresville. Forty-five years later a man known as O’Bar came to town and helped get the post office established. In return, the residents honored him by renaming the town after him.

Another doctor in the area, James Azle Steward, was living in a log cabin in the area. Steward owned much of the land that makes up Azle. Likewise, Steward donated land to the town for a variety of purposes from businesses, schools and churches. In fact, he deeded land for the townsite resulting in the town being renamed Azle Texas in his honor.

Azle Texas’s first a plank house was built of lumber transported from Houston on an ox drawn wagon. It wasn’t until 1957 that the town became incorporated. As the years passed Azle’s population grew slowly. The recent population is 13,369 (2019). The town spans more than 5,000 acres.

Azle ISD, home of the Hornets, had nearly 6,800 students enrolled in 2019. The school district has a B rating with niche.com. Azle Texas is 16 miles from Fort Worth via State Highway 199.
