Looking to buy Decatur Texas real estate? Decatur Texas is in Wise County. When Wise County was established in 1856 a site for the county seat was sought. Having been in the area already for two years as one of the earliest settlers of the county was Col. Absolam Bishop. Soon Col. Bishop would become a leader of the county organization. One task he took on was that of locating the county seat. Col. Bishop’s group had their eyes on a spot with views of West Cross Timbers and the Trinity River’s West Fork. The bald hill was in the center and at the highest point of the county suitable for accommodating a town square.

However, 60 acres of land had already been deeded to the county for the site. This led to a heated election. Yet, following a contested count of ballots the hilltop location came out as the winning site. Shortly thereafter Col. Bishop announced his plans for the layout. The courthouse in the center with businesses placed around the square facing in toward the square and the four corners leading to main streets.

But first, the town was originally named Taylorville. However, Col. Bishop opposed of the namesake’s political affiliation. Therefore, Col. Bishop pushed to have the area renamed. And it was renamed to Decatur in honor of Stephen Decatur, a United States naval officer and commodore.

Today the Decatur Texas town square is a hub of activity and entertainment. With traffic, both by vehicle and foot, coming through day and night.
