75th Liberation Remembrance and Celebration
of Life for Second Lieutenant Fiske Hanley II, US Army Air Corps Veteran
Join the hosts, Roll Call Fort Worth and the USVET.fund for this time of reflection, remembrance and gratitude for an American Hero in a Flag Presentation Ceremony. Fiske was a Purple Heart Veteran, Prisoner of War at the Kempeitai headquarters in central Tokyo, Japan where he was set free on August 29, 1945. Photos Courtesy of Rick Irving, Fort Worth Texas
You could see Fiske most anywhere around Fort Worth. An all-around remarkable gentleman, he wore his Army Air Corps uniform hat and jacket with pride. To begin with, Fiske was born in Brownwood and raised in Fort Worth. Fiske Hanley’s childhood dream was flying airplanes; doing so following college as a B-29 super fortress flight engineer. When his plane was shot down over Japan, not only did he suffer injuries, he became a special POW. He spent six months enduring horrific treatment and torture. 75 years ago, this month he was one of 60, out of a total of 2000, surviving prisoners of war to see liberation.
