Jamie Popwell founder of Flags for vets installs Flag Pole number 459 in Denton Texas at American Legion Post Post 71. Just in time for the 100th Anniversary of the post’s existence. Recent renovations paved the way for the installation of this towering flag pole that now stands proud. Jamie and the members of Post 71 made sure the foundation of this American Legion Post will remain solid for the next century of service.
How One Gesture of Gratitude Turned into a Mission. For three years Jamie Popwell faithfully and proudly served with the United States Marine Corps. His patriotism runs deep. Jamie also has a deep respect for our flag and for other veterans. Three years ago that appreciation became Flags for Vets.
First Things First: Flags for Vets Began as an Idea
First came the idea. Purchase materials, install the lighted pole and raise our national flag at the home of a veteran. Jamie knew a few veterans in his community and set out to implement his idea for them.
Beginning with his own money and those few local veterans, Jamie set his idea in motion. However, Jamie’s idea soon grew into a mission when he learned many others shared his admiration.
With Shared Admiration Flags for Vets Expanded
Instantly requests began coming in for Jamie to install a lighted flag pole for veterans they knew. Not only in his community. All over the nation. To the tune of over 400 veterans, including Medal of Honor recipients, in more than 20 states.
Flags for Vets Will Travel to Veterans Anywhere
Furthermore, donations made to Flags for Vets purchase the materials and lighted poles and flags. Then Jamie personally drives to each veteran’s home anywhere in the Southeast (flying elsewhere). There he installs the flagpole himself. He digs the hole, fills the concrete, puts up the lighted pole and raises the US flag on it. Then he and the veteran and any family and friends present salute the flag.
In fact, to nominate a veteran provide their DD-214 and tell Jamie about them. There is no age limit or service limitations. Nominating or sponsoring a veteran may be done by contacting Jamie at Jamie@flagsforvets.us.
