In her early days, dating back to the 1850’s, she was known as Prairie Point, a settlement established by a group of settlers from Missouri. The location, near present day Rhome, was the crossroads of two stagecoaches. Eight years later settler Samuel Sheets, owner of land near the crossroads, began selling lots to the town. The year 1858 also brought a post office to the settlement. Within a few years Prairie Point was the second largest settlement in Wise County.

However, the settlement had only an inadequate band of old men and boys as their defense, leaving Prairie Point vulnerable to the violence of Indians and bandits. Not to mention the fact that many of the townsfolk were involved in the Peace Party Conspiracy of 1862 which would eventually lead to the hanging of 5 residents. As a result, a year later the settlement was all but deserted.

Nearly twenty years later came the laying of tracks by the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. With it came a new settlement which became Rhome. A local rancher, Col. Byron Crandall Rhome was known for bringing the first Hereford cattle to Wise County. A year later came a post office and by 1890, Rhome Texas had a population of 175. Along with a church and a school were 2 flour mills. One of which was Wise County’s first built roller mill. In fact, it is possible that this roller mill was the first in Texas as well. At one time, L. W. Renshaw owned the mill and was producing flour under the Gold Medal brand name. In the 1930’s Renshaw was approached by General Mills with an offer to purchase rights to the Gold Medal name. Renshaw was paid $5,000 by General Mills. In 1942 Rhome Texas was incorporated.

Today, Rhome Texas covers over 3,000-acres and has a healthy estimated population of 2000 (2019). In Rhome are the Veteran’s Memorial Park exhibit, the International Exotic Animal Sanctuary, and Eagle Mountain Lake.
