Living in Roanoke Texas
Looking to buy Roanoke Texas real estate? Roanoke Texas was incorporated in 1933. The community is in Denton County, with a small part of the Roanoke also reaching into Tarrant County. In the mid 1800’s while the railroad was coming through town, visitors from Virginia arrived at nearby Denton Creek. The location was named Medlin Settlement in honor of families in the colony. The settlement consisted of 0.5-acre tracts.
Denton Creek had a habit of flooding. A flood in 1879 covered rooftops while also putting the settlers and their livestock in danger. So the settlement moved south a bit to the current site of Roanoke. Several years later as the Texas and Pacific Railway was being laid through the area, more settlers made their way to the site. The name of Roanoke was chosen by a railroad surveyor from Roanoke, Virginia.
Roanoke Texas is growing having seen a population increase over 70% since 2010. Families are either moving into up-and-coming subdivisions around town, into one of the small town’s neighborhoods, or onto a piece of land for sale still close enough to all that the community has to offer.
The Roanoke Texas historic downtown is on Oak Street. On Oak Street are 15 restaurants. As a matter of fact, Roanoke Texas is nicknamed the “Unique Dining Capital of Texas”. The restaurants on Oak Street are:
- The first Babe’s Chicken Dinner House
- Bayou Jack’s Cajun Grill
- Chop Shop Live
- Craft & Vine Taproom and Eatery
- Dizzy Lucy’s
- Hard Eight Bar-B-Que
- Hey Sugar
- Inzo Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar
- Jack & Grill
- Los Compadres Cantina
- Mug’s Café & Bakery
- Oak Street Food and Brew
- Oak St. Pie Co.
- Soul Bird Chkn
- The Classic at Roanoke
- Wise Guy’s Pizzeria
Additionally, there are spots for dining all around Roanoke Texas along Highway 377, Highway 114, and Byron Nelson Boulevard.
Interestingly, Highway 114 Business, the main thoroughfare east and west through the community, is named Byron Nelson Boulevard after the golfer who once lived in Roanoke on a 500-acre ranch in the 1940’s. In 1934 Bonnie and Clyde stayed in Roanoke at the Old Sneed Hotel (present day Roanoke Visitor’s Center).
