Texas Hill Country

Texas hill country has some of the most beautiful places in the state of Texas.  Sharing a few is Texas real estate agent Mark Donahew. During the springtime when people drive around the Texas hill country the bluebonnets can be seen on the roadsides.  Frequently people will be on the side of the road taking pictures in the middle of a bunch of bluebonnets.  Anyone doing this should be aware that snakes, especially the rattlesnake, like to crawl through bluebonnets as well.  Just driving around the Texas hill country is very relaxing because of all of the landscape and views but there are also things to do.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is an old German settlement right in the middle of the Texas hill country. It is also the hometown of Admiral Chester Nimitz.  The Pacific War Museum is located in Fredericksburg for this reason.  Once while watching the movie ‘Midway’ I had to laugh at something Henry Fonda said.  Fonda played Admiral Nimitz in the movie and he said that he missed the flatlands that he grew up in.  The Texas hill country is anything but flat.

Besides the German restaurants and shops in town, the museum has a very good exhibit. In fact, at times there is a reenactment of U.S. Marines making an amphibious landing and ending with the raising of the flag. Just like what was done on Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima.  There is even a two man Japanese submarine in the museum that was captured after it grounded on a reef during the Pearl Harbor attack.

Enchanted Rock

Just north of Fredericksburg is Enchanted Rock.  Basically it is an enormous chunk of granite that has drawn people for thousands of years.  Various Indian tribes camped around the rock and in the 1800’s Captain Jack Hays of the Texas Rangers had to scramble up the rock and lay in a depression while fighting off Comanches.  The park is a great place for hikers and the top of the rock has a wonderful view of the Texas hill country.

Texas State Capital Building in Austin

Austin

On the eastern edge of the Texas hill country is the state capital of Austin.  Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States with a very diverse population.  Austin is a very happening city and can be a really nice visit.  The dome of the state capital rises up in the city and is one of the tallest state capital domes in the country, being taller than the U. S. capital.  I accompanied my daughter on a school field trip to the capital once and as we toured the capital I was really impressed by the art work throughout the building.  I really enjoy driving around Texas but the Texas hill country ranks as one of my favorite parts of the state.
