Real Estate Agent Mark Donahew Shares the Texas State Bird

Real estate agent Mark Donahew #610688 shares the Texas state bird. When I was in school we learned about our state.  We learned the history of Texas as well as the symbols.  One of the symbols we learned about was the Texas state bird.  The state bird of Texas is of course the Northern Mockingbird.  The Mockingbird is a tough little bird that isn’t frightened of much.  It certainly stands up to anything infringing upon its territory which makes it fitting that it was chosen as the Texas state bird.

The Mockingbird and the Rat Snake

The Mockingbird is very interesting to watch.  I recently wrote about the Texas rat snake.  Rat snakes are found in trees very often trying to raid a bird nest.  Mockingbirds will tell on the snake if one is observant.  When sitting out in the yard and all of a sudden birds begin making a commotion in a particular tree you can sit back and watch very close and quite often spot the snake.  The Texas state bird really takes offense to the Texas rat snake and it makes for a pretty interesting show in nature.  The same is true for other interlopers.  Mockingbirds will swoop down on unsuspecting house cats and let them know that it is time for them to move on as well.

The Beneficial Mockingbird

Mockingbirds also provide a number of services.  One thing is what they eat.  Although they eat seeds and fruit a great deal, they also forage on various bugs and lizards.  In that arena they are certainly beneficial to a garden.  Something else that Texas is known for is the large number of mesquite trees within the state.  For a mesquite seed to germinate it is helpful if it passes through an animal’s digestive tract.  The Mockingbird is one of the most popular animals that accomplishes this.  It is not surprising that the Texas state bird contributes so much to the spread of one of the most recognizable trees in the state.  When I was in school I was taught what the Texas state bird is but the other details I have had to pick up over the years with the ones from observation being the most entertaining.
