Cottle County Seat – Paducah, Texas

As a matter of fact, a decade ago the population in this town south of the panhandle of Texas was under 1,200. A decrease of around 300 from the decade before. Still yet, Paducah is the county seat of Cottle County.

Cottle County itself had a population of just over 1,500 in 2010. The county is named for George Washington Cottle, a Texan who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Spanning 577,280 acres, Paducah is not only the county seat, it is as well Cottle County’s largest city.

Texas Ranch Land was Offered for Votes

Interestingly, Paducah, Texas is named for a city of the same name in Kentucky. A former resident by the name of R. Potts was so intent on naming the town south of the Texas panhandle Paducah that he gave settlers land in exchange for voting for the name. His efforts paid off in 1892 when Cottle County was organized. One year prior Cottle County’s first post office was established in Paducah. In 1893 came the town newspaper, the Paducah Post.

Paducah is known as the “Crossroads of America”, and for good reason. Intersecting in the middle of town are three US Highways. First is US Route 83 leading north to Childress and south to Guthrie. Second is US Route 70 leading east to Crowell and west to Matador. Third is US Route 62 which follows 83 north and 70 west. Additionally, Paducah is the site of the first post office in Cottle County and the Star Coach Stop at OTTA Springs.
