Time in Texas with Real Estate Agent Mark Donahew
Time in Texas with real estate agent Mark Donahew #610688. Whether you live in or out of the state, spending some time in Texas doing something out of the ordinary and having a good time is easy to do.
Fort Worth Stockyards
For instance, taking a trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards. Visit Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ for a Big Chop, some beans and a cold beer. Stop in at Leddy’s, Cavenders, The Best Hat Store or Finchers White Front for a hat, boots, and some souvenirs. Then stick around from something you may not see very many other places which keeps a part of Texas history alive – a cattle drive. Then head over to Billy Bob’s and dance the night away.
Fishing from a Stock Tank
Something many people enjoy doing that is not really that out of the ordinary is fishing. There are many places to fish in Texas such as lakes and rivers, but anyone who has spent much time in Texas has undoubtably heard the term “tank.” A stock tank is a man-made pond that is used for watering livestock. Growing up I swam in many an old muddy stock tank as well as fished in them. Birds walking around the edge of a body of water will get fish eggs on their feet and carry them to the next body of water they go to. That is one of the ways that fish just show up in tanks. Walking around the banks fishing and camping on the banks at night can be a great deal of fun.
Snake Farm Zoo
While driving down I-35 below Austin, close to New Braunfels, a traveler spending some time in Texas can make a stop at the Snake Farm Zoo. I first visited this place as a kid back in the late 1970’s with my parents. Back then it was just the snake farm and had all kinds of snakes from rattlesnakes to black mambas to rat snakes. They now have more animals in the back such as hyenas and a petting zoo complete with goats and pot-bellied pigs. I have taken my kids to the Snake Farm Zoo and a navy buddy of mine visited it with his family when they spent some time in Texas on a vacation.
Hog Catching
Texas has a large population of wild hogs and Texans have learned to make a sport out of it. The Lions Club in Sabinal, Texas holds a fundraising activity in March of every year called the Wild Hog Festival. My kids used to love wild hog time in Texas. The main attraction is the hog catching contest.
They set up an arena and two person teams get into the arena with a big burlap bag. For the men’s teams they let about an 80-100 pound hog loose and they have to catch the hog and put him in the sack and drag the sack across the line. The three quickest times get a belt buckle. I have a 3rd place buckle that I am pretty proud of. The hogs get smaller for the different classes until, for the smaller kids they’re not much more than piglets. For a fun time in Texas that not many people have even heard of, I recommend the Wild Hog Festival.
