H.D. Snow & Son House Moving

The year is 1942. ‘Casablanca’ is premiering, a gallon of gas in .15 cents and a new house costs slightly less than $4,000. The cost of helping a friend with a favor? For C.A. Snow it is the sparking of a passion.

C. A. Snow

C.A. Snow was more than happy to help his friend out. Though he had never moved a house before, he was willing to lend a hand in any way he could. What he came away with was an awe for the house moving industry and a determination to do it himself.

So he began C.A. Snow House Moving that same year in the Parker County town of Weatherford. For that first year C.A.’s new house moving business was operating with step jacks. By 1943 he was able to upgrade to a winch truck on which he welded two beams providing the house a solid foundation while moving.

H.D.’s First Move

Then five years later he was moving the business to its current location in Fort Worth. Soon days out on the lot or on site at a move were spent with C.A.’s son H.D. by his side. The young boy had such a hunger to one day join the business full time. Anytime H.D was not in school he was where his father was learning the family business. At twelve years of age he got his first taste of doing a move. His job was moving two outhouses and digging the holes for their new locations. From that day forward he anxiously dreamed of the day he would join the business. Which he did after graduating in 1953.

H.D. Snow & Son

For thirteen years H.D. was a foreman with C.A. Snow House Moving. Sadly, though, C.A. would pass away in 1966. H.D. had a determination to follow in his father’s footsteps. So he began his own business naming it H.D. Snow House Moving. He found himself traveling coast to coast and meeting other house movers. Through the years they would all share the methods and techniques that worked best for them and those which they avoided. Equipped with this knowledge H.D would make tweaks to his strategies eventually developing new concepts.

During this time H.D.’s son Gary was growing and watching and learning the family business.  He also had a dream of joining the business.  Which he did upon graduation in 1978.  At which time H.D. changed the name of the business to H.D. Snow & Son House Moving. As well, H.D.’s daughters joined the business working the office end.

H.D. Snow & Son House Moving has moved various buildings and structures over the years. Including bridges, cisterns and historic buildings. There was even a two story home in Denison. This home had a gazebo on the roof. Moving just one mile, all furnishings would remain inside and a group of spectators rode along on the move sitting in the gazebo.

Over time H.D. initiated a tradition that clients will see still takes place today. A glass of water is placed on a formica countertop. This glass of water travels the entire distance of the move…without losing a drop!  For over seventy years they have been changing their clients’ addresses with aspirations to continue doing so for decades to come.
